Lefkofsky was born in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and grew up in Southfield with a Jewish family background. His father, Bill, was a structural engineer, and his mother, Sandy, was a school teacher. After graduating from Southfield-Lathrup High School in 1987, he attended the University of Michigan and graduated with honors in 1991. He enrolled at the University of Michigan Law School and received his Juris Doctor in 1993.
