He is of Italian and French descent on his father's side, while his mother is of Italian and Portuguese descent. Metcalfe played in several basketball leagues during his teen years in Waterford, Connecticut, and graduated from The Williams School in New London, Connecticut. He dropped out of New York University once he booked the part of Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald on the soap opera Passions.
