ईसाई मिशनरियों के आगमन से पूर्व अमेरिका, अफ्रीका, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और प्रशांत द्वीप समूह के पारंपरिक संस्कृतियों में धड़ निरावरण स्वीकार्य ही नहीं बल्कि व्यापक रूप से प्रचलित था। मुसलमान आक्रमण के पहले विभिन्न एशियाई संस्कृतियों में भी स्त्रियां अपने वक्षों को सार्वजनिक स्थानों में आवृत नहीं करती थीं।
