Tegenwoordig is FC Bayern München ook een rivaal van Dortmund. De wedstrijden tussen deze beide rivalen staan bekend als Der Klassiker. De club won acht landstitels en was in 1966 de eerste Duitse club die een Europese beker wist te winnen. In 1997 won de club ook de UEFA Champions League en de wereldbeker voor clubteams. De club werd opgericht op 19 december 1909. Aan het begin van de oprichtingsvergadering was er nog geen naam voor de nieuwe club. Het duurde een hele tijd voor Dortmund de topclub werd die het nu is. In de begindagen stond de club in de schaduw van stadsrivalen Dortmunder SC 1895, VfB Dortmund 1897, Alemannia 05 Dortmund en BV 04 Dortmund.
