Hij kwam uit voor RKSV DCG, VPV Purmersteijn en FC Volendam voordat hij in de jeugdopleiding van FC Utrecht kwam. Hij debuteerde op 15 mei 2011 als basisspeler in het eerste elftal, in een thuiswedstrijd tegen AZ. Van 2014 tot medio 2017 speelde Bulthuis in Duitsland voor 1. FC Nürnberg in de 2. Bundesliga. Vervolgens vertrok hij naar Azerbeidzjan, waar hij onder contract kwam te staan bij Qäbälä PFK. Bulthuis tekende in januari 2018 een contract voor tweeëneenhalf seizoen bij sc Heerenveen. In januari 2019 vertrok Bulthuis naar Zuid-Korea en tekende een tweejarig contract bij Ulsan Hyundai. Op 19 december 2020 won Bulthuis met Ulsan Hyundai de AFC Champions League, door in de finale met 1–2 te winnen van Persepolis. Door winst van de belangrijkste Aziatische clubcompetitie nam Bulthuis met zijn club Ulsan Hyundai deel aan het FIFA WK voor clubs, waarin het op 4 februari 2021 de kwartfinale met 2–1 verloor van CONCACAF Champions League-winnaar Tigres UANL.
