Daarvoor was hij van 24 januari tot september 2023 bondscoach van het Poolse voetbalelftal. Van 31 juli 2014 tot en met 15 december 2022 was hij bondscoach van het Portugees voetbalelftal, waarvoor hij vier jaar lang Griekenland onder zijn hoede had.
