De atletiekafdeling van KAA Gent was in 1895 een van de tien oprichters van de sportbond Union Belge des Sociétés de Sports Athlétiques. De voetbalafdeling werd opgericht in 1900 en is bij de KBVB aangesloten met stamnummer 7. KAA Gent speelt in de eerste klasse en heeft blauw en wit als kleuren. De club won in 1964, 1984, 2010 en 2022 de Beker van België en werd in 2015 voor het eerst Belgisch landskampioen. De club won toen ook haar eerste Belgische Supercup.
Op 1 januari 1864 werd door de Gentenaars G. Descamps en Karel Marinx de Société Gymnastique la Gantoise opgericht, een vereniging voor het promoten van gymnastiek. Doorheen de jaren scheurden enkele verenigingen zich af. Op 10 september 1891 fuseerde de club met de Association Athlétique, die zelf een samensmelting was van jongere clubs zoals Racing Club, Running Club en Red Star. De nieuwe fusieclub heette Association Athlétique La Gantoise, en naast enkel turnen werden de activiteiten geleidelijk uitgebreid naar atletiek, voetbal (in 1900), boksen, cricket, wielrennen, schermen, hockey, zwemmen, waterpolo en tennis. Uit deze vereniging ontstond tevens de huidige atletiekclub KAA Gent.
