Belangrijkste afspraken in dit verdrag betreffen wederzijdse verdediging en samenwerking van de legers van de aangesloten landen, aanvankelijk ook als krachtenbundeling tegen samenwerkende communistische landen binnen de invloedssfeer van de Sovjet-Unie, ook bekend als het Oostblok. Het NAVO-hoofdkwartier is gevestigd in het Brusselse stadsdeel Haren. In 2024 telde deze verdragsorganisatie 32 lidstaten.
De in 1992 opgerichte Organisatie voor het Verdrag inzake Collectieve Veiligheid (CSTO), een militair bondgenootschap van Rusland, Armenië, Kazachstan, Kirgizië, Tadzjikistan en Wit-Rusland kan, evenals het Warschaupact dat heeft bestaan van 1955 tot 1991, worden gezien als een tegenhanger van de reeds in 1949 opgerichte NAVO.
