In 1977 won een voormalige schoolband van Notre Dame Middle School in Crawley onder de naam Easy Cure – genoemd naar een nummer dat werd geschreven door de drummer Lol Tolhurst – in een talentenjacht een contract voor opnames bij de platenmaatschappij Ariola-Hansa. De band bestond toen uit Robert Smith als zanger-gitarist, Porl Thompson op gitaar, Michael Dempsey op basgitaar en Tolhurst achter de drums. De gewonnen opnames vonden plaats in oktober/november 1977, maar Hansa was er niet tevreden over. De opnames van Easy Cure werden nooit uitgebracht. Smith had inmiddels belangstelling voor een meer minimalistische stijl. Omdat Thompsons gitaarstijl en gitaarsolo's niet bij deze stijl pasten, werd de gitarist in de eerste helft van 1978 uit de band ontslagen. Kort daarna gaf Smith de band als driemansformatie de nieuwe naam 'The Cure'.
