In 2015 kon hij een jaar niet fietsen door een knieblessure. Hij verschoof zijn aandacht naar zijn studie en haalde een universitair diploma in de technologie.
Eind 2017 werd Lafay Frans kampioen op de weg bij de beloften, voor Benoît Cosnefroy. Hierna mocht hij stage lopen bij Cofidis, Solutions Crédits. In 2018 won hij een etappe in de Ronde van Savoie-Mont Blanc en werd hij achter Marc Hirschi tweede in de wegwedstrijd voor beloften tijdens de Europese kampioenschappen.
