青森県青森市出身。川上澄生の版画「初夏の風」を見た感激で、版画家になることを決意。1942年（昭和17年）以降、棟方は版画を「板画」と称し、一貫して木版の特性を生かした作品を作り続け、その偉業から板画家として世界的に知られる。墨書や「倭画」（やまとえ）と名付けた肉筆画も残している。
棟方は、昭和26（1951）年11月、疎開先の富山県福光町から鈴木信太郎の旧アトリエだった荻窪四丁目57番地（現・上荻一丁目）の家に移り、昭和50（1975）年9月13目、72歳で亡くなるまで杉並に住んでいた。
