東京都杉並区生まれ。父親は産婦人科の開業医。杉並区立桃井第五小学校、獨協中学校卒業。1979年3月、獨協高等学校卒業。1980年4月、明治大学政治経済学部に入学。大学在学中は雄弁部に所属した。1984年3月、同大学卒業。同年4月にテレビ東京へ入社し、おもに営業を担当した。
1990年、第39回衆議院議員総選挙に進歩党公認で旧東京4区（定数5）から出馬したが、得票数9位で落選した。
